The Context of Indonesian Islam

Recent developments concerning the place of Islam in Indonesian society may seem paradoxical. The Muslim religion is undeniably more visible in public life since a few years: national and regional authorities are increasingly adopting laws and decrees presented as being in compliance with Islamic law or morality. In the economic world, banks and companies step up efforts to bring both products and management in line with Islamic guidelines. Yet at the same time, Indonesian political Islam is declining. Muslim parties have lost almost a quarter of their electorate in the 2009 general elections. The radical transformation projects conducted in the name of Islam (MMI, FPI, the Khalifah movement) now appear to have lost some ground.

                By comparing the Indonesian situation with other countries, this workshop explores this apparent paradox and tries to answer the following questions:   

Do these Indonesian developments reflect a religious revival that would bring the country further away from the secularization process which has characterized Western modernity? Or rather should we consider this "re-enchantment of the Archipelago" as a “cultural” way to accommodate a wide adherence to a universal model of society introduced by globalization? On a more general perspective, recent trends show that Islam throughout the world tends to be more and more open to the outside world, to the influence of globalization. The workshop will also try to review on how this tendency for openness results in new ways to apprehend secularization and religion.
